There is a striking statistic from the National Christian Foundation that caught my eye recently: 79% of givers credit their mothers with shaping their heart for giving.

It’s a powerful reminder that influence truly starts in the home. When I look at my own life, I see my mother’s fingerprints all over my understanding of generosity. But as I reflect on her impact this Mother’s Day, I realize she left me something even more significant than a philanthropic spirit.
The Advice That Changed Everything
Nine years ago, while driving to visit family, I was a new mother, anxious and eager to “figure it all out.” I turned to my mom and asked for her best advice. Her response was simple, yet it has become the bedrock of my life:
“The most important thing is my relationship with Jesus.”
At the time, I knew that. I had chosen to follow Him at a young age. But through the years of navigating motherhood and life’s ups and downs, I have come to truly know that. Everything—my patience, my work, and my capacity to give—stems from my growth in Him.
A Heritage of Prayer
My mother didn’t just tell me that faith mattered; she modeled it in the quiet, mundane moments of our lives.
As a teenager, I remember many times walking into my parents’ bedroom to talk, only to find my mom on her knees in prayer. When she chauffeured my sisters and me around, her coffee-stained prayer books and journals would slide across the front seat. She was always in conversation with the Father.
She wasn’t aiming for a “perfect” aesthetic; she was building a spiritual legacy. She was right—growing in my relationship with Jesus is the most important thing I can ever do. It is only through that connection that I can show up for my husband and my children with a heart of grace.
Disciplines of the Heart
Motherhood is a beautiful, sanctifying, and often difficult journey. I am far from a perfect mom. I make mistakes, I lose my temper, and I fall short.
But because of the foundation my mother laid, I’ve learned that discipline and discipleship go hand in hand. I’ve learned the power of apologizing to my kids and sharing my own need for grace. We talk openly about Truth and about Jesus, who modeled perfection so we don’t have to.
A Legacy for Every Woman
Whether you are a mother or not, you have the power to leave a legacy. Influence isn’t reserved for those with a specific title; it belongs to anyone who chooses to live out their faith authentically.
When you have Jesus, you have everything you need to impact the women and girls around you. This year, I’m leaning into that sanctifying journey, grateful for the woman who showed me that the greatest gift you can pass down isn’t what’s in your bank account—it’s who is in your heart. 💜
